1990's Spider-Man #1 features one of the most recognizable and iconic comic book covers from the modern era. Starting July 7th, 2012, Heritage Auctions will begin accepting bids for Todd McFarlane's original cover art. The piece will surely attract a great deal of attention, and may set a record for the most expensive comic book art. The current highest public selling price for original art is for Frank Miller's splash page from The Dark Knight Returns #3, which sold for $448,125 back in May, 2011.

On February 25, 2011, Page 2 from Fantastic Four 200 sold on eBay for an amazing $1,625.00 (eBay Auction 16054831336). While the page has many qualities, the realized sale price is shocking. With all due respect to Keith Pollard, his original art usually does not sell in this price range.

However, the page does comes from a classic Bronze Age anniversary issue, showing the Thing battling Dr. Doom. Previous pages from the same issue depicting Dr. Doom in battle have sold for much less, so it will be interesting how much similar pages will sell for in the future.
